Whitefriars Legacy 2024

Exhibition Panel

I made the panel as a tribute to Alf Fisher who began working at James Powell & Sons (Whitefriars) in 1952. It was made exclusively from slab glass, some of which came from the firm that opened in 1680 and closed in 1980.

Some of the slabs were donated to me by Caroline and Tony Benyon. Caroline’s father, Carl Edwards, was the Chief designer at Whitefriars when Alf began training there. The glass ranged in depth from 2mm to over 12mm in the space of a few inches so it was very challenging to lead up as I had to increase the height of the lead across the panel. The surface undulates giving the panel a three-dimensional quality.

The Reconciliation panel in the background depicts one of Alf’s windows in Westminster Abbey that first inspired me. He has been generous in sharing his knowledge and skills with me and I have written extensively about his life.

The panel won the first Glass Painters and Glaziers Award at the British Glass Biennale in 2024. It is available for exhibition.
